Long term Opportunity: Vietnam Proposes Golden 10-Year Visa for Foreign Investors and Skilled Professionals

Last update: Wednesday July 23, 2025

Vietnam has become an increasingly attractive destination for foreign investors and global businesses with its stable economic growth (GDP), rising living standards, and strategic location in Southeast Asia. In 2025, the country is proposing a Golden Visa program with a term of 5 to 10 years aimed at attracting high-net-worth individuals, long-term investors, skilled professionals, and international business leaders.

What is Golden Vietnam Visa?

The Tourism Advisory Board (TAB) has submitted a proposal to Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, targeting three new long-term visa categories to attract investors, skilled professionals, and high-net-worth individuals:

  • Golden Visa (5–10 years): For long-term stays, multiple entries, simplified procedures, and potential family sponsorship.

  • Investor Visa (10 years): Targets foreign investors with a pathway to permanent residency after five years.

  • Talent Visa (5 years): For talents of professions, researchers, artists, and innovators, with a clear renewal and potential work opportunities.

Some Reasons Under Golden Visa

The TAB expressed concern that Vietnam’s tourism and investment environment could fall behind regional competitors if more progressive, investor-friendly incentives are not adopted. To test feasibility, TAB suggests piloting the program in major hubs such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Phu Quoc, and Da Nang before nationwide rollout.

Additionally, TAB recommends creating a Visa Policy Reform Board— requires correlation between public and private sectors—to oversee implementation, review policies, and ensure alignment with national economic goals.

The policy is currently under review and may be implemented as part of ongoing legal and immigration reforms in the near future. If approved, Vietnam would join other countries such as the UAE and Southeast Asia countries such as Singapore and Thailand in providing similar long-term visa programs that have proven effective in attracting foreign talent and capital.

Other Long-term Stay Options

Besides, for the long term visa, Vietnam provides two important options for extended stays: Temporary Residence Cards (TRCs) and the 5-Year Visa Exemption.

Vietnamese living abroad and their immediate family members are the main beneficiaries of the 5-year visa exemption, which permits several visits to Vietnam for a maximum of 180 days each time. The exemption is linked to the applicant's passport or foreign residency document, which must have at least six months left on it, even though it is valid for five years. On the other hand, depending on the type of visa, Temporary Residence Cards (TRCs) provide longer-term stay options for people like diplomatic personnel, employees, investors, and students. TRCs may be valid for two, three, five, or even ten years, depending on the category.

However, supporting documentation such as financial records, health certifications, and sponsorship letters might be required of applicants.
